Hunter Mountain and three other summits that are within the Catskill High Peaks Bird Conservation Area provide a wide variety for hikers and backpackers.

Hunter-Westkill Wilderness Area
As part of the 2008 revison of the Catskill Park State Land Master Plan the Hunter-Westkill Wilderness Area was designated by the re-classification of three other Forest Preserve units: the West Kill-North Dome Wilderness, the Ox Clove Wild Forest and a portion of the Hunter Mountain Wild Forest. The summit of Hunter Mountain was protected through the unit management plan which will make any future attempt to develp the summit much more difficult.
Trails Overview:
The Devil's Path (Red), Spruceton (Blue), Blecker Hollow (Blue), Hunter Mountain (Yellow), Colonel's Chair (Yellow) and Diamond Notch (Blue) trails provide many opportunities for hiking and backpacking with circular routes.
The Diamond Notch (Blue) trail through Diamond Notch Road is open to mountain biking.
